How to Calculate Discounts
A discount reduces the original price by a percentage. The sale price equals the original price minus the discount amount. If sales tax applies, it's calculated on the discounted price.
Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount%/100)
Savings = Original − Sale Price
After Tax = Sale Price × (1 + Tax%/100)
Savings = Original − Sale Price
After Tax = Sale Price × (1 + Tax%/100)
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a sale price from a percent discount?
Multiply the original price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A $60 item at 25% off costs 60 × 0.75 = $45.
How do stacked discounts work?
They apply one after another, not added together. 20% off followed by an extra 10% off is a 28% total discount (0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72), not 30%.
How do I find the original price after a discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid $45 after 25% off, the original price was 45 ÷ 0.75 = $60.
Is tax charged on the discounted price?
Yes — in Canada and the US, sales tax applies to the price you actually pay after store discounts and coupons are deducted.
