GST, HST and PST in Canada

Canada has three kinds of sales tax. The federal GST (Goods and Services Tax) is 5% everywhere. Five provinces combine it with their provincial portion into a single HST (Harmonized Sales Tax). British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba charge a separate PST on top of GST, and Quebec charges QST. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.

To add tax, multiply the price by the combined rate: a $100 purchase in Ontario costs $100 × 1.13 = $113. To remove tax from a total, divide by the same factor: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100.

Note: some items are exempt or zero-rated (most basic groceries, prescription drugs) and some provinces exempt certain goods from PST. Rates shown are the general rates and may change — verify with the CRA or your provincial government for tax filings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GST, HST, and PST?

GST is the 5% federal tax charged across Canada. HST is a single combined federal-provincial tax used by Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. PST (or QST in Quebec, RST in Manitoba) is a separate provincial tax charged on top of GST in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec.

Which province has the lowest sales tax?

Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon charge only the 5% federal GST with no provincial tax — the lowest in Canada. The highest combined rates are 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the combined rate. If you paid $113 in Ontario (13% HST), the pre-tax price is 113 ÷ 1.13 = $100. Use this calculator's Remove Tax mode to do it automatically.

Are groceries taxed in Canada?

Most basic groceries — fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread — are zero-rated, meaning no GST/HST applies. Snack foods, restaurant meals, and prepared foods are generally taxable.
