How the Final Grade Formula Works

Your overall course grade is a weighted average of your coursework so far and your final exam. To find the final exam score you need, the calculator solves that average for the unknown exam mark:

where Weight is the final exam's share of your grade as a decimal (30% = 0.30).

Worked Example

Suppose you're sitting at 78% going into a final worth 30% of the course, and you want to finish with 80%. Your coursework contributes 78 × 0.70 = 54.6 points. You need 80 − 54.6 = 25.4 points from the final, so you must score 25.4 ÷ 0.30 = 84.7% on the exam.

Reading the Result

If the required score is over 100%, the goal isn't reachable on the final alone — check whether bonus marks or regrades are available, or set a more realistic target. If it's 0% or below, your goal is already locked in before you write the exam.
